The Cosmos Club occupies the Townsend House, a grand mansion defined by its ornate limestone facade and the intricate carvings around its heavy entrance doors. John Russell Pope designed the structure for Mary Scott Townsend in nineteen oh six, modeling the exterior after the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Within these walls, club members who have distinguished themselves in science, literature, or the arts gather in quiet rooms, carrying on a tradition of intellectual discourse that began when John Wesley Powell founded the club.
