The Fisher Building is a narrow eighteen-story tower wrapped in a creamy white terra-cotta skin. When it opened in eighteen ninety-six, architects Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root used a steel frame to support the structure, a daring move that allowed for massive windows on every floor. The facade features elaborate carvings of fish, crabs, and sea creatures, a playful tribute to the building's namesake, Lucius Fisher. He made his fortune selling paper and printing supplies, and he demanded this nautical detail.
