The Transportation Building rises fourteen stories with a buff-colored brick facade that spans nearly the entire block between Dearborn and Federal streets. Built in nineteen eleven, the structure served as a hub for dozens of railway offices and shipping firms that needed proximity to the city's central passenger terminals. In the nineteen eighties, developers gutted the crowded office warrens to create hundreds of residential apartments. A brass plaque near the main entrance still commemorates the building as a central artery of commerce.
