Coviello Field in West New York is named for Joseph Coviello, a man who remains one of the most prolific high school football coaches in New Jersey history. During his long career, Coviello racked up 243 victories, a state record at the time of his retirement in 1972. He was an alumnus of the local Memorial High School and returned there to lead the team to a remarkable twelve county championships and eight state sectional titles. Beyond his coaching prowess, Coviello was instrumental in creating the first state football playoff system, establishing the framework for the championship structure that defines New Jersey high school sports today.
