El Zaguán (Historic Santa Fe Foundation)

El Zaguan features a long, low profile of adobe walls topped by a portal that stretches deep along the street. Behind the gates lies a narrow corridor, or zaguan, which once allowed horse-drawn carriages to pass directly into the inner courtyard. Margretta Dietrich bought the property in the nineteen fifties to preserve its classic architecture. She filled the long garden with irises and fruit trees, creating a quiet retreat where she hosted guests like Aldous Huxley and J. Robert Oppenheimer during the Manhattan Project.
