San Miguel Chapel

San Miguel Chapel features thick, sun-baked adobe walls that have stood in some form since the early seventeenth century. Known as the oldest church structure in the United States, it served as a place of worship for the Tlaxcalan Indians who arrived with Spanish soldiers. During the Pueblo Revolt of sixteen eighty, the wooden roof burned, but the heavy walls survived. Today, the chapel remains a quiet space where the original mud-brick construction still meets the harsh New Mexico sky.
