William Goadby Loew House

The William Goadby Loew House stands on East 93rd Street as a stubborn relic of a bygone era. While much of New York City succumbed to the economic pressures of the Great Depression, stockbroker William Goadby Loew and his wife Florence commissioned this mansion in 1931. It earned a reputation as the final private palace built on the Upper East Side, appearing at a moment when the city's wealthiest citizens were largely retreating from such massive, single-family footprints. The couple lived here with a staff of sixteen, maintaining a lifestyle of opulence that seemed to ignore the breadlines and shanty towns spreading across other parts of the city at the time.
