Delacorte Theater

The Delacorte Theater owes its existence to a persistent theater producer named Joseph Papp and a stroke of bad luck. In the late nineteen fifties, Papp ran a mobile stage built into a truck that traveled through city parks to perform Shakespeare. When that truck famously broke down in Central Park, it inadvertently highlighted the need for a permanent home for his free, accessible performances.
