Indian Hunter (Ward)

The Indian Hunter bronze statue holds a unique place in the history of Central Park as the very first sculpture by an American artist ever installed there. Unveiled in eighteen sixty-nine, it depicts a Native American man and his hunting dog in a tense, watchful moment. The work was so significant that it launched the career of its sculptor, John Quincy Adams Ward, who would eventually be known as the dean of American sculptors. Continue
