NYC Bubble House

The structure in front of you is known as the Bubble House, a radical piece of midcentury architecture that stands as a deliberate interruption to the traditional 19th-century streetscape of Lenox Hill. Designed by architect Maurice Medcalfe and completed in 1969, the townhouse replaced a conventional rowhouse to reflect the intense cultural fascination with the space race and futuristic design. Its defining feature is a smooth, pink stucco facade punctuated by twelve convex oval windows that rotate to open. Medcalfe intended these porthole-like apertures to serve as a sculptural, modern reinterpretation of the classic bay window.
