The New York Society Library

The New York Society Library is the oldest cultural institution in New York City, predating the United States itself. Established in 1754, it began as a small subscription collection in a single room of the city's original colonial-era City Hall. Its founding members were civic-minded residents who believed that access to books was essential for the intellectual and social prosperity of the growing city. While many other grand institutions later emerged, this library remains a private, independent organization that has operated continuously for over two centuries, fueled by the contributions of its members rather than public tax dollars.
