Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia once called the school he founded his most hopeful accomplishment. He started the High School of Music and Art in 1936 with a specific vision of a free, public institution where the city's most talented teenagers could develop their creative skills while still completing a full academic education. This was the first school of its kind in the United States.
