The path you are on is part of a thirty-two-mile loop that encircles the entire island of Manhattan. This route transforms what was once a derelict industrial shoreline into a continuous public corridor for pedestrians and cyclists. Long before this greenway existed, the city’s waterfront was dedicated strictly to shipping and heavy commerce, effectively walling off the river from the people who lived here.
