Sawkill

Before the concrete canyons of the Upper West Side existed, this land was shaped by a powerful natural force known as the Sawkill. This stream was once the largest hydrological network on the island of Manhattan, stretching nearly nine miles from its source near the site of the American Museum of Natural History all the way to the East River. It was a dominant feature of the landscape, carving through forested hills and granite terrain long before the city grid was laid out.
