Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Plaza

The Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Plaza stands as one of the first Holocaust memorials established in the United States. Dedicated on October 19, 1947, the site was inaugurated with a gathering of 15,000 people, including 100 survivors of the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps. At its center lies a modest white granite plaque, which was originally intended only as a temporary cornerstone for a much larger, more elaborate monument that was never constructed. Over the decades, repeated proposals for grander structures were rejected by the city, leaving this singular, understated stone to become the focal point of remembrance for the community.
