First Congregational United Church of Christ - Portland

religious

The First Congregational United Church of Christ wears a roof of green copper that rises above the surrounding neighborhood, anchored by a tall, tapered tower. It was built in eighteen ninety-five to house a congregation that had already outgrown three previous homes since the mid-nineteenth century. When the architect designed it, he chose a Romanesque style with heavy stone arches. A few years after it opened, the minister stood at the pulpit and declared the space belonged to the entire city.
