Portland City Hall

The Portland City Hall occupies a full block with its four-story facade of rusticated sandstone and terra cotta trim. Its most recognizable feature is the central rotunda, crowned by a copper dome that reflects the light above the surrounding business district. Built in eighteen ninety-five, this building replaced the city's rented quarters with a permanent seat of municipal power. When the mayor sat down at his desk in the new building, he found a structure designed to project permanence and civic pride.
