Shemanski Fountain

The Shemanski Fountain features three tiers of bronze basins decorated with delicate bronze ferns, standing at the center of the park block. Alfred Shemanski donated this structure to Portland in nineteen twenty-six. He wanted a place for horses to drink, but he also included two smaller basins specifically for stray dogs. During the fountain’s dedication, Shemanski brought his own horse to take the first drink from the central basin. It remains a rare example of a fountain built to serve both human and animal needs.
