The Chinatown Gateway features five curved, green tiled roofs and a row of gold-painted dragons perched along its central arch. This structure serves as the official entrance to Portland's historic district, built in nineteen eighty-six to celebrate the city’s trade relationship with its sister city, Suzhou, China. Artisans from Suzhou crafted the stone and wood components, shipping them across the Pacific to be assembled by local workers. The gateway defines the threshold between the modern city and a legacy of exclusion laws.
