Hawthorne Bridge

The Hawthorne Bridge features a heavy steel truss design painted a bright, distinctive yellow. It carries the distinction of being the oldest vertical lift bridge still in operation in the United States. When a ship needs to pass, the entire central span rises between the towers like a massive elevator. In nineteen ten, when it first opened, engineers relied on two massive counterweights weighing over a million pounds each to lift the bridge deck, a system that still functions today.
