S&D Polish Deli

A sign with white letters painted directly onto the glass identifies S and D Polish Deli. Inside, the shelves hold rows of imported pierogi, hunter stew, and jars of pickled beets. Stanislaw and Danuta, a Polish couple, opened this store in nineteen eighty-four to serve the immigrants working in the nearby steel mills. Even as the mills shut down, the store kept selling the same sausages and rye bread, keeping a piece of the neighborhood’s industrial era alive behind its counter.
