Mellon Square

Mellon Square is a terraced garden suspended above a six-level parking garage. Its design features geometric patterns of light and dark stone, fountains, and mature honey locust trees that shade the concrete platforms. When it opened in nineteen fifty-five, it became the first park in the country built on top of a garage. The developers tore down the old buildings on this block to create an open space, sparking a wave of mid-century urban renewal that transformed this part of Pittsburgh.
