Senator John Heinz History Center

The Senator John Heinz History Center sits behind a facade of red brick and massive, arched windows, built originally in eighteen ninety-eight as a warehouse for the Chautauqua Lake Ice Company. Inside, the center holds six floors of Pennsylvania history, ranging from the French and Indian War to the inventions of the twentieth century. In the late eighties, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania claimed the building, clearing away tons of sawdust once used to insulate blocks of ice for the city.
