The Fourth Avenue Historic District stands apart because of its heavy, granite-faced stone banks and office towers, built at the turn of the twentieth century when this street served as the financial heart of Pittsburgh. These buildings were designed to look permanent and impenetrable. During the height of the industrial boom, men in top hats moved millions of dollars in deals inside these lobbies. The buildings still project the confidence and wealth of the steel barons who once walked these floors every single day.
