Union Trust Building

The Union Trust Building features a dramatic, mansard-roofed silhouette punctuated by ornate terracotta carvings and two prominent corner towers. Henry Clay Frick commissioned the structure in nineteen fifteen to serve as a high-end shopping arcade and office complex. Architect Frederick Osterling designed the facade with distinct Venetian Gothic arches, which caused a rift between him and Frick over construction costs. Frick eventually fired Osterling, hired new architects to finish the interior, and left the building as a massive, heavy-stone statement of Gilded Age ambition.
