Gulf Tower

The Gulf Tower rises above Pittsburgh with a tiered, pyramidal crown inspired by the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. When it opened in nineteen thirty-two, the building housed the headquarters for the Gulf Oil Corporation, which controlled the city's industry for decades. The weather beacon at the summit remains a local landmark, flashing blue for fair weather, orange for rain, or red for snow. A pilot once flew his plane between the tower's setback tiers during a stunt, barely clearing the structure.
