The Mirador Álvar Nuñez features a sturdy stone balcony perched directly above the cliff edge, facing the churning Iguazú River. Named for the Spanish explorer Álvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, the structure marks the general area where he became the first European to report seeing the falls in fifteen forty-one. He traveled by canoe from the coast, left his boats behind, and trekked through the dense jungle until the roar of the water signaled the arrival of the massive cascades ahead.
