Bridge Stairs

historic

The Bridge Stairs are a steep, narrow flight of sandstone steps wedged between terrace houses in Millers Point. They exist because the hilly terrain of the Rocks and Millers Point proved impossible for early carriages to navigate. In nineteen twenty-four, a young woman named May Matthews lived in a house nearby and reportedly used these stairs to reach the docks every day. She eventually became a tireless advocate for the residents during the massive government clearances of the area in the nineteen sixties.
