The Sydney Conservatorium of Music features a series of sandstone battlements and turrets that mimic the silhouette of a medieval fortress. Originally built as the stables for the neighboring Government House in eighteen twenty-one, architect Francis Greenway designed the structure to accommodate forty horses in grand style. Governor Lachlan Macquarie spent a fortune on these stables, which eventually fueled his political downfall. The building evolved from a stable into a center for musical education by nineteen fifteen, housing thousands of students today.
