Sydney Town Hall

The Sydney Town Hall sits on a foundation of crushed sandstone, characterized by a dizzying array of columns, pilasters, and a massive clock tower that anchors the city intersection. It stands on the former site of an old cemetery, where workers famously unearthed thousands of bodies during excavation in the eighteen seventies. Most were never reinterred, meaning the entire building rests atop a forgotten colonial graveyard. The mayor at the time simply ordered the construction to proceed, burying the past beneath the marble floors.
