Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre anchors Haymarket with its facade of glazed terracotta tiles and the twin minaret-style towers that rise above the street. Beneath the roof, the architect Henry White created an indoor space designed to feel like an ancient Italian piazza, complete with faux stone facades, twinkling stars, and plaster statues. When the theatre opened in nineteen twenty-eight, the local press marveled at the sheer scale of the auditorium, which swallowed three thousand theatergoers in a single, immersive dreamscape of atmospheric architecture.
