Aboriginal Housing Company

The Aboriginal Housing Company building stands out for its curved, brightly colored facade that mimics the shape of a boomerang. Established in nineteen seventy-three, it emerged from the long struggle of the Black Power movement in Redfern. Indigenous activists occupied these terrace houses to prevent developers from clearing the area. They successfully forced the government to grant them the land titles. This organization became the first Indigenous-managed housing provider in Australia, operating entirely under the control of the local community.
