Aboriginal Medical Service Redfern

The red brick facade on Turner Street holds the original site of the Aboriginal Medical Service. Founded in nineteen seventy-one, it began as a temporary shopfront staffed by volunteers who refused to accept that Indigenous Australians were dying from treatable illnesses at record rates. When a local doctor agreed to help, the staff cleared out a disused factory space. That initial clinic provided the first community-controlled health care in the country, forcing a shift in how medical services reached marginalized people in urban centers.
