Taylor Square Pride Village

The rainbow flag permanently flying above the Taylor Square intersection marks the heart of Sydney’s Pride Village. This patch of Darlinghurst served as the epicenter for the nineteen seventy-eight street parade, a protest that turned into a violent confrontation between marchers and police. Many participants ended up in jail that night, but the community organized to fight the charges and secured the decriminalization of homosexuality in New South Wales. The square remains the symbolic site where that struggle for recognition began.
