Chinatown Sydney

Two large, golden, twin-arched gates mark the entry to Dixon Street. These structures, capped with traditional Chinese tiles and red lanterns, identify the heart of Sydney’s Chinatown. Chinese merchants first settled this area in the nineteenth century, drawn by the proximity to the bustling produce markets at Darling Harbour. In nineteen twenty-one, a prominent merchant named Quong Tart opened a tea house here that became a social hub for the local community, effectively cementing the neighborhood as the city's Chinese cultural center.
