Australia Post - Sydney GPO

The Sydney General Post Office features a long, sandstone colonnade that lines the southern edge of Martin Place. Architect James Barnet designed this massive structure in two stages during the eighteen seventies and eighties, pulling stone from the Pyrmont quarries to build it. When the clock tower was added, residents complained it blocked their view of the sky, leading the government to shorten the spire. That tower still carries the weight of a heavy iron bell cast in London, nicknamed Big Ben.
