Agar Steps

The Agar Steps connect Kent Street to Lower Fort Street through a steep, narrow passage of sandstone stairs flanked by high, weathered retaining walls. They bear the name of William Agar, a publican who operated the nearby Lord Nelson Hotel in the eighteen thirties. While the city grew up around them, these stairs remained a quiet artery for residents moving between the docks and the ridge above. A single lamp post marks the midpoint, casting shadows across the stone slabs at night.
