Cadman's Cottage

The sandstone cottage on George Street holds a jagged, sloping roof and a heavy, timber-framed door that dates back to eighteen sixteen. John Cadman, a former convict who eventually became the superintendent of government boats, lived here with his wife during the eighteen thirties. He anchored his vessels right at the water’s edge, which sat much closer to these walls before later land reclamation projects pushed the harbor away. The stone walls carry the heavy, weathered texture of the convict era.
