St James' Church stands out with a tall, slender copper spire that turns green against the Sydney sky. Designed by convict architect Francis Greenway, the church opened in eighteen twenty-four. Greenway had been transported to the colony for forgery, yet Governor Lachlan Macquarie commissioned him to build this structure using convict labor. The brick walls show the marks of the men who laid them, while the interior retains its original Georgian proportions, built when the site still functioned as a courthouse.
