Susannah Place

The four terrace houses of Susannah Place hold a row of mismatched paint colors and uneven rooflines against the grander sandstone of The Rocks. Built in eighteen forty-four by Irish immigrant Edward Riley, these homes stayed in continuous residential use until nineteen ninety. While surrounding slums were cleared for modern development, these tenants stayed put. In the nineteen thirties, resident Annie Gallagher used the front room of number fifty-eight as a shop, selling loose tea and kerosene to neighbors from behind a wooden counter.
