The Wayside Chapel features a distinctive, bright red front door that faces directly onto Hughes Street. While other churches in Sydney often retreat behind high fences or iron gates, this entrance stays open to the sidewalk to invite anyone passing by inside. Ted Noffs, a Methodist minister, started the ministry here in nineteen sixty-four to serve the people of Kings Cross. He famously argued that the church should be where the action is, rather than a place separate from the world.
