Pont Perrière

The Pont Perrière spans the canal with a single, sharp stone arch that sits unusually low against the water. This bridge once served as the primary entrance to the city of Annecy for merchants coming from the mountain passes. In the fourteenth century, a fortified gate stood right here, forcing every wagon and traveler to pay a toll to the ruling Counts of Geneva. The gate is long gone, but the bridge remains the narrow, cramped bottleneck where the old city forced its economy.
