The Passage de l'Évêché creates a narrow, covered stone tunnel between the towering walls of the old Bishop's Palace and the neighboring houses. Its low, vaulted ceiling and rough masonry hold the chill of the mountains even in midsummer. Bishop Jean-François de Sales ordered this stone link built in the seventeenth century to connect his residence directly to the church. He wanted a private path to move between his home and his prayers without stepping onto the public street below.
