The Promenade du Thiou follows the emerald path of the Thiou river, which serves as the natural outlet for Lake Annecy. For centuries, the rushing water powered the tanneries and mills that once defined the city’s economy. In eighteen sixty-six, the engineer Sadi Carnot oversaw the final adjustments to the river’s flow to prevent flooding. Today, the banks hold remnants of those industrial workshops, now repurposed as quiet walkways where the water moves steadily toward the Fier river in the north.
