10 Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau

The pale stone facade at ten Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau features a heavy, arched doorway that interrupts the tight rhythm of the Vieille Ville street. This building once served as the home of Madame de Warens, the woman who famously sheltered and educated a young, wandering Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the seventeen twenties. Rousseau spent his formative years here, learning music and literature within these walls. He later described this period in his Confessions as the only truly happy time of his entire adult life.
