Place Blanche sits at the center of the intersection where the Rue Blanche meets the Boulevard de Clichy. A large, circular metal ventilation grate marks the entrance to the metro station below, rising slightly above the pavement. In the late nineteenth century, this spot drew crowds for the Moulin Rouge, which sits just steps away. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec frequented the dance halls surrounding this square, capturing the performers and patrons in sketches while sitting at tables in the nearby cafes.
