Pont de Bercy

The Pont de Bercy carries two levels of traffic, with a lower stone arch bridge supporting an upper steel viaduct for the metro. Originally built in the eighteen sixties using stone, the bridge proved too narrow for the expanding city. Engineers widened the structure in the early nineteen hundreds by adding the iron supports underneath to carry the elevated tracks of Line Six. This stacked design allowed the trains to cross the Seine while leaving the lower deck open for cars and pedestrians.
