Army Museum (Paris)

The golden dome of Les Invalides rises above the seventh arrondissement, crowned by a lantern that reaches over one hundred meters into the sky. Louis the Fourteenth commissioned this sprawling complex in sixteen seventy to house disabled veterans who had fought in his many wars. The architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart designed the chapel to project royal power. Years later, officials placed Napoleon Bonaparte in a massive sarcophagus of red quartzite directly beneath that dome, forever anchoring the identity of this building to his legacy.
