The bronze statue of Marshal Joseph Gallieni stands near the Invalides, capturing the commander in his full military uniform. He gained fame for his role in the defense of Paris during the First World War. When the German army approached the capital in nineteen fourteen, Gallieni famously ordered the requisition of six hundred Parisian taxis to transport reinforcements to the front lines. These vehicles delivered the troops who helped stall the advance, ensuring that the city remained under French control throughout the conflict.
