Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre

Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre is the second oldest surviving church in Paris, with a history that reaches deep into the foundation of the city. While many visitors are drawn to the nearby basilica, this church stands on ground that has been used for worship for nearly two thousand years. Archaeological remains discovered within the structure include marble columns and capitals that date back to an ancient temple, likely Roman, which predated the current stone building. Its continuity as a sacred site has persisted through the Merovingian period and into the Middle Ages, making it a rare survivor of the rapid urban changes that transformed the rest of the capital.
